Ideal weather conditions for the final event of the season were a bonus. In fact, looking back over the year we haven’t lost many rounds to the wet stuff, if at all.

The Mob had a very disappointing event, with leakages from head gaskets and then rear mains oil seals sidelining them from the event.

The fight for the Championship was very tight, only 15 points in it, to the favour of Relentless over Nuthin’ Fancy for the No. 1 spot going into the event…. all to play for.

Chaos opened the show with an off-the pace 7.898/118.85, after a repeat of the clutch gremlins that started at the Euro Finals.

Relentless was then paired against Xtreme Racing, but soloed for a win when a bolt holding the bottom pulley departed the Xtreme machine and they had to shut down.

Nuthin’ Fancy then staged against Freddy’s Revenge and took the win 6.889/197.85 to a loosing 7.220/180.67, but it was a great side-by- side to the stripe.

Round 2 saw Frank Bennett up against Joe Bond. Frank got out first but Joe was not far behind, then the Relentless chute popped out at 800ft and Joe took the win, 7.062/191.24 to Frank’s 7.294/125.14…. putting them equal on championship points….

Bob Glassup was next up against Dave Grabham and Xtreme got to the stripe first with a oh-so close-to-the sixes 7.030/169.79 to Dave’s 7.342/177.78.

The new Motor Psycho of Adam Gleadow and Darren Galloway tried an observed run, but a broken throttle cable put paid to their attempt.

The last chance to may the ‘final 4’ commenced at 12.15 on Sunday, with Chaos trying to make the field, up against Relentless, but loosing out with more clutch woes 7.288/161.32 to Franks 6.772/202.43.

Next, Nuthin’ Fancy could only stage for the points, having a suspect crank, so Xtreme laid down a stella 6.792/195.55 to take the win and the first ‘six’ for Bob.

Motor Psycho tried again to make a pass, but a broken oil hose put paid to that chance.

So, the final 4 were Xtreme v Nuthin’ Fancy in Nos 1 & 2 positions and Relentless v Freddy’s Revenge as Nos 3 & 4.

Relentless fired up as did Freddy’s Revenge, but the latter spat a rod out of the side of the block, leaving Frank Bennett to solo with a 9.277, for the 3rd place.

The final matched Xtreme against Nuthin’ Fancy and both went for it, neck and neck to the finish. Bob got the win with a 6.874/180.69 to Joe’s 7.080/184.32, to take the event title for the Xtreme Racing Team, well deserved in everyone’s opinion.

Overall a good meeting in good conditions, next year will be even better as new cars enter the Series.

A mixed weekend for the Class, Friday being lost to two rain showers, allowing few cars to test run.

On Saturday we lost 4 hours before our first call-out due to a major oil down, leaving time for only one pass instead of two.

Frank Bennett carded 6.793, whilst most others struggled for grip or got tyre shake. The Xtreme Topolino got oh-so- close to the Armco, but just avoided contact. Venom was sidelined with a late discovery of a blower malfunction. Jon Best ran a great full pass, 6.711/209.32, in the Felstead, Best and Lotsabeera nitro burner, to gain his full licence. Due to another left hand lane oildown, only the spectator lane was available for safety reasons, so some pairings became solo’s, unfortunately.

The final qualifying session was at 1.00 on Sunday and 4 pairs fought for the right to be in the Finals shoot-out.

Venom outran Relentless with a wheel carrying 6.902 to a 7.42 from Frank, who got tyre shake causing the chute to deploy at 500 ft. The Mob beat Chaos 8.07 to 8.92, neither run being pretty, with John Wright getting close to the centre-line and lifting off. Xtreme ran against Nuthin’ Fancy, but past the lights Bob experienced severe bouncing causing a front ‘A‘ Arm to shear and a front wheel to depart, pulling him directly across Joe’s path. Quick reactions from Joe as he swung hard right and took to the field, but breaking the lower frame rail in the process – tough luck.

Clayton Round, back after a long absence with new parts in the ‘T’, was 2 seconds off their best, leaving the win to Dave Grabbham, who had a wild, use-all-the-lane ride to record his forwarding progress.

So the final 4 were set. For the 3rd and 4th spots, Clayton was paired against John Wright, Chaos left hard and ran their best-of-the-meet, 6.773 with a 1000ft click-off, to a loosing 7.097 from the Rebel ‘T’.

The Final was a disappointment, Freddy’s Revenge being shut down after the burnout due to a small oil leak, leaving Frank to solo for a win. A little lucky for the Relentless Team as they lost two gears on the pass, with an off-the pace 7.201, but a win is a win and you take whatever you can get in this unpredictable Class.

We had an abbreviated field of 5 cars, as others had various rebuild or parts shortages and had to pull out, unfortunately.

The weather was great, sunny both days, 46% humidity, 70-80 degs F and corrected altitude of 1440 ft.

First Round on Saturday started with Venom against Nuthin’ Fancy, Joe away first through tyre shake, with Tony having to pedal and shutting of at half track, giving the win to the Nuthin’ Fancy team, 7.478 to 8.467.

Next up, Frank Bennett, back after a two race absence, against John Wright. Frank wasn’t rusty, leaving first with a better reaction time, but at the eighth there was 0.01 in it, with the win going to Relentless, as Chaos was checking out the top end stability on the new combination. John stopped the clocks at 6.516/220.98 and nearly not the car, when the ‘chutes didn’t deploy, to Franks slower, but winning, 6.699/193.80.

Freddy’s Revenge got a bye, with a newly repaired engine and ran a great solo pass, 7.271/186.64.

For the Second Round the pairing was Joe Bond against Frank Bennett. Joe moved first but Frank had it covered, 0.989 to 1.067 at 60ft. A great run by Relentless, 6.654/175.71, off it at 1000ft, with Nuthin’ Fancy moving around at the top end, so Joe shut off and dumped the laundry to bring it back into shape….. a great side-by-side match up.

Tony Betts had a bye as Chaos couldn’t show due to fuel pump problems, but Venom hit the shakes at 60ft, Tony pedalled, tried again, but the car was moving all over his lane, so he wisely shut off.

The Felstead, Best & Lotsabeera Topolino made it’s first attempt at a licensing run, a great burnout but at the hit the performance went away. Early teething troubles, to be expected with a new entry, but the car looked and sounded good and it’s great to have a new nitro entry.

Sunday dawned with repeat good weather, a great track, so expectations were high.

First up, Chaos with a ‘repaired’ fuel pump, staged against Venom. After staging, Tony left before the starter had activated the tree, and John sensed movement and reacted and left, pulling a ‘cherry’. No time for Tony, under the ‘first or worst’ rule, handing the win to Chaos, but a performance drop after a quick pedal indicated that the fuel pump problem was still present.

Next was Freddy’s Revenge against Nuthin’ Fancy, a great race, neck and neck to the stripe, Dave got it, 7.238/188.93 to Joe’s 7.270/186.40.

Then a bye for Relentless, but Frank wasn’t taking it easy, 6.426/191.24 – a new PB and a great run.

For the Final Round, Joe Bond got a bye when Chaos couldn’t show, 7.391/181.37.

The Final, based on the two lowest aggregate ET’s was Relentless against Freddy’s Revenge. Dave out of the hole first by half a car length when Frank ‘snoozed’, but by the 1000ft mark Frank had it in hand to record the victory, 6.571/196.09 to Dave’s 7.172/178.48 – a new PB for the Somerset Team, so some consolation at least.

On this form, Relentless is going to take some beating, 4 consistent mid ‘sixes’ and unbeaten on the day…….

A great weekend of drag racing enjoyed by all the teams, it doesn’t get much better.

On the Saturday we decided to have an afternoon Test’n’Tune session, so that all could get a feel for the track and how their new combinations would react.

The first pass was at around 2.00PM, with Venom staged against Nuthin’ Fancy. Joe was away first, but Tony was reeling him in when there was a thump from Venom, scattering aluminium pieces on the strip, Joe getting the win with a 7.36/189.92 to Tony’s 8.74/94.17.

Next up was Bob Glassup paired against defending champion Paul Wratten in the Dirty Harry car. A super burnout from Paul, but to no avail as, on the green, after a holeshot, tyre shake set in and considerable movement around the lane so off the throttle at half track. The Xtreme Racing Topolino ran straight and true using the new, more powerful engine, but Paul carded the win with an off-the-pace 7.92/118.04 to a faster but loosing 7.22/191.25 from Bob.

John Wright in the Chaos car was on a bye and recorded a 1.1s 60ft time, with 600ft pass of 8.37/106.9 to check out the handling of the new chassis – seemed to be a straight run with no visible problems.

Round 2 was at 5.30PM, by which time the track seemed to be loosing heat.

Tony Betts in the Venom car was sidelined with a very damaged motor, when it had hydrauliced on the previous pass, caused by the clutch not locking up and the revs soaring to 12,000 RPM….nasty.

Joe Bond then staged against Bob Glassup – on the green all eyes were on the Xtreme Topolino as it left hard and headed right, sideswiping the Armco, Bob kept his foot in and did it again before lifting – true Altered antics. Joe took the win, 7.23/195.25 to Bob’s 18.08/31.44.

After repairs to the guardrail and some sweeping up, it was Dirty Harry to run on a bye. On firing up, the blower belt broke, causing a short delay as a new one was fitted. After a long smoky burnout, Paul staged and ran a 0.98s 60ft time, got tyre shake, then fuel out of the headers, so obviously some problems with a 9.39/91.73 pass.

Last to run, on another shakedown pass, predicted to be a half pass, came Chaos, which amply lived up to it’s name. John ran a 1.0s 60ft and as the car left the concrete and onto the tarmac, the left rear slick unloaded and the Topolino headed towards the guardrail on two wheels. John got off the throttle and corrected the car without hitting the Armco, but he said afterwards that he could read the letters GKN on the bolt heads holding the guardrail together. A very close shave and a superb driving job.

Monday dawned to damp and wet conditions, so we were obviously only going to get one other pass, after it cleared at around 3.00PM.

Our class was somewhat decimated with damages, Bob Glassup having to withdraw with a crank in two pieces.

So, just Nuthin’ Fancy versus Dirty Harry for the winner and runner-up spots.

After two good coordinated burnouts, Joe was away first, Paul catching him but weaving all over his lane and pretty close to the guardrail. Joe got to the stripe first and the title with a 7.17/196.22, a new best for Joe at this track, to Paul’s valiant, but loosing 7.50/142.38.

We were done, now to regroup, repair damages and get ready to put on a show at the FIA Main Event at the month end.

The Easter Thunderball did not go as planned – rain prevented track action on Friday, Saturday and most of Sunday….. very disappointing for us all.

The conditions cleared a little by mid Sunday afternoon and we got our first passes for 2009 at around 3.00PM. In spite of the sterling efforts by the Santa Pod track crew, the conditions were such that the traction was limited with little heat in the track – 11.7 degrees C.

The first pairing was Dennis Wratten in Dirty Harry against Tony Betts driving the re-vinyl wrapped Venom 2. Unfortunately, Dennis had a throttle problem and had to shut off and be pushed back, leaving Venom on a bye. Fighting for grip, Tony ran a 13.01/63.05, but with a 60ft of 1.01s.

Freddy’s Revenge then squared up to Nuthin’ Fancy, but Dave Grabham had to shut off after the burnout due to a leak, leaving Joe Bond to solo to a 8.04/116.85. Joe recorded a 1.06s time at the 60ft mark, albeit using both lanes and taking out the 330ft reflector, before getting back into his lane.

A re-match was then arranged between Dirty Harry and Freddy’s Revenge, but Dave had to shut off again before staging with another leak. Dennis soloed, having ran a 0.99s 60ft time, then tyre shake pushed the car into the other lane, so no time was recorded.

Next up was The Mob versus Relentless – 11.84 to 8.13 from Frank Bennett. Jim was off the throttle at 300ft, audibly pedalling the loud pedal in an attempt to get traction.

Then Bob Glassup, on a bye, in the newly re-engined Xtreme Racing Topolino, making a welcome return to the tracks. At the hit, a 1.11s 60ft, the car getting close to the wall, but Bob stayed in it, guiding the car back to the centre of the lane, to record a fine 7.44/181.37 – nice run in the conditions.

Last up was Chaos, John Wright at the wheel, for the first pass since the repairs. A nice burnout, then a 1.04 to 60ft, drifting right, pedalling, off the throttle and recording a 10.05/82.88 in the lights.

Our 5.00 PM slot was delayed until nearly 9.00PM, with little light and even less traction as the temperature dropped.

Venom was on a bye, 7.50/132.82 into the dark, lifting at 800ft.

Frank Bennett and Bob Glassup then performed a couple of good burnouts, considering the conditions. On the green it was a 9.46/98.36 for Frank to a loosing 10.26/98.84 for Bob, both feathering the throttles and hanging on as long as they dared.

Dave Grabham was next, paired against Dennis Wratten. The Dirty Harry Topolino gave a tremendous and brave run into the gloom, 1.00 to 60ft, 6.73/192.84 at the stripe to Freddy’s Revenge 8.42/141.34.

Chaos then had a bye, but instant spin and tyre smoke at the hit, as the cars’ power overcame the track.

Easter Monday dawned better with dry, but not warm, conditions.

Our 3rd slot, to determine the final 4, started with Venom against Dirty Harry. Dennis had to shut off with a Lenco problem, leaving Tony to solo for a bye and what a run – 1.00 to 60ft and 6.50/221.84 at the finish – a good looking pass with a strong top-end charge.

Then Freddy’s Revenge against Nuthin’ Fancy, both getting out of shape and pedalling, usual Fuel Altered antics, Joe getting the best of it, 7.23/187.26 to Dave’s 8.41/169.11.

The Xtreme Racing Topolino lost it’s forward gears after backing up, so leaving Relentless to solo for a bye – a fine 6.90/184.32, a new PB for the Team.

A no-show for Chaos due to clutch problems, so the final 4 were set, Nuthin’ Fancy v Freddy’s Revenge for the 3rd & 4th run-off and Venom v Relentless for Winner and Runner-Up spots.

At around 6.00 PM, the cars squared up for the Finals, starting with the run-off for the 3rd & 4th places. Both Joe and Dave had difficult, wandering runs, Freddy with a lot of smoke at half track and a hard right towards Joe, who saw him coming and backed off early, both cars suffering engine damages.

For the Finals, after good burnouts, Frank Bennett read the lights to perfection, taking the win with a 6.63/181.22 to Tony Betts’ tyre shaking 7.46/129.37.

A good win for the Relentless Team and yet another PB.

Saturday dawned with thick fog blanketing the area, this didn’t lift sufficiently for racing to start until 11.00 AM, delaying the program somewhat. For Round 1, first up was Joe Bond in Nuthin’ Fancy against points leader Paul Wratten in Dirty Harry IV. During the burnouts Paul’s car lost fire, subsequently traced to a faulty fuel shut-off valve, leaving Joe to solo for a close-to-the- wall 9.631/75.19.

Dirty Harry IV had been pushed back to cool down and run later, but still within the session.Next up, Havoc against Relentless, the first time that Frank Bennett had run the Topolino in it’s new configuration at Santa Pod.So…….period perfect Bantam versus new generation nostalgia fuel altered…..The usual long smokey burnout from Nick Davies in Havoc was started and went on and on until track, when Nick pulled over and parked the car. Turned out that a nozzle hadblocked, causing a piston to hole and leaving a small oil down in the lane.Relentless, meanwhile, had shut-off and pushed back until after the clear-up. Soon after, Frank was able to fire-up, stage and run a shake-down pass of 7.614/133.58 with the new combination.Last up was the new Venom 2, shoed by Tony Betts, on a bye. This was the first time out at Santa Pod for the full-bodied car and on the green, Tony fought it to a tyre-shaking 8.347/106.17, having to back-off before half-track due to the effects of the vibration.

The second round was run at 7.30PM into a darkening sunset sky. Joe Bond had a bye-run, but didn’t take it easy, carding a new PB of 7.062/196.28.The next pairing was Venom against Relentless. Tony got to the stripe first with an improving 7.265/153.58 to Frank Bennetts troubled 9.406/90.78, having encountered valve train problems, sidelining the Team for the rest of the event. Then the two championship leaders squared off – Havoc v Dirty Harry IV….Into the darkening skies they thundered, side by side, the win light going to Paul 7.219/185.83 to Nicks 7.400/201.40.Havoc went off the end of the track, when the brakes failed, for a spot of gardening. When Nick finally stopped in the field, he was surprised to be surrounded by lights and his first thought was that the track had set this up as part of the low light availability. However, when he looked around, he was stunned to see that the light was from a tractor that was ploughing the field, advancing on him at a rate of knots !Sunday was a little misty, but the sun soon burned it off and proceedings commenced with only a small delay. Now down to only two pairs, first up was Venom against Dirty Harry IV, but drivers having agreed to try to stay in their own lanes……At the hit, both cars left hard, but both had to be corrected as they moved about the lanes and a pedal-fest ensued. Tony took the win with a 7.065/167.17 to Paul’soff-the-pace 8.089/156.70.

Then the final pairing of Nuthin’ Fancy against Havoc. On the green they both left together, Nick carrying the front wheels for a good 300 yards, but just loosing to Joe’s even better PB, 6.857/198.66 to Nick’s 8.405/136.86.First time into the ‘sixes’ for Joe, a tremendous achievement for the first of the ‘new generation’ to record a sub-seven second run.Unfortunately, the run trashed the clutch in a comprehensive fashion, so the Nuthin’ Fancy Team were out of competition, but ending the Season on a ‘high’.So to the Semis and Finals, only 3 left as the attrition took its toll. The aggregate times meant that Havoc were in third place, on a bye, as Nuthin’ Fancy couldn’t make the call.Nick boiled the hides for 100ft from the tree, but then there was a ‘pop’ as the manifold burst panel decided that it had decided that enough was enough, so ending the Teams meeting. The Finals were between Venom (first time for a nitro car into the finals) and the ever consistent Dirty Harry IV. The tension was high as they both staged after impressive burn-outs.At the hit, Paul stamped his authority on the National Finals with a fine win, 6.870/195.02 to Tony’s 7.297/153.58.The win for the Wratten Brothers also consolidated the Series points lead, giving the 2008 Series title to the Essex team.

Being as weather dependant as we are, the forecast was for dry conditions for Fri, Sat & Sunday, which was encouraging. The SCR track crew started to prep the strip on the Friday, but had to abandon it when the heavens opened and the rain poured down. The knock-on effect of this was that they had to start from scratch again in the Saturday morning, such that our first round, provisionally scheduled for 11.30AM, actually commenced at 3.00PM, loosing us one round of the event. The track prep was the best that could be done, given the nature of the event, with RWYB treaded tyres on the track, so no new records were likely from NFAA members. The show opened with the nitro burners, The Mob squaring up to Venom 2. As the tree activated, Tony Betts was a smidgen too quick and pulled a red light, handing the win to Jim Usher, 8.211/127.05 to 7.768/161 .32, respectively. Tony pedalled the car a couple of times on the marginal track and got close to the centre-line, before he shut off.The next pair were Frank Bennett in Relentless, only the second outing for the heavily revised Topolino, against a welcome return for Neil Townson in the well engineered Northern Spirit. On the green, Northern Spirit was long gone, on a less that straight line 7.910/186.08, whilst Frank faltered out of the hole when both cylinder head gaskets decided to depart.Series leaders Dirty Harry IV and Havoc were next to the line. Both laid down good burn-outs, but Paul Wratten had to pull to the side of the track and abandon the car, subsequently traced to 4 damaged inlet valves, sidelining them for the rest of the event. Meanwhile, not to be daunted, Nick Davies steered Havoc to its usual wheels up, squirrely pass to record 8.810/157.88 to take the win.Dave Grabham in Freddy’s Revenge had a bye-run to close out the first round, but he didn’t take it easy. A 7.312/186.08 pass being the low ET of the event, but at the cost of spun Nos 3 & 4 rod bearings and scored crank, preventing further competition.Later that evening we all participated in a Cacklefest, which was enjoyable, followed by a firework display, to mark the 20th Anniversary of the HRD’s.Sunday dawned a little misty and a bit damp, the track crew having to work hard again to get the strip into an acceptable condition and we had our first round of the day at a delayed 1.45PM.The Mob sat this one out to do some maintenance work, so first up we had Havoc against Relentless. After a good pair of burn-outs, Havoc had a fuel pump problem, so had to idle down the track, Frank having to shut-off to allow the Topolino to cool down, as Havoc hadn’t cleared into the return road.Northern Spirit then staged against Venom 2, then both drivers having to perform driving jobs to keep in their lanes when the lights counted down. Tony Betts got to the stripe first with a 7.674/152.78 to 7.941/186.91 from Neil, but death smoke was seen at the top end from Venom 2. Examination in the pits revealed damage to most pistons and a blackened crank, preventing any further runs.Frank Bennett restaged a cooled Relentless and fought the lane conditions with 3 or 4 pedals, recording a creditable 8.011/143.57.This left 4 cars for the final round, No. 3 Qualifier, Relentless, up against Havoc at No. 4, and Northern Spirit, No. 1 against The Mob at No. 2 – the first time that a nitro burner had made the Finals this year in the revised format.Relentless took the 3rd place with a 7.697/150.19 to a losing 9.366/100.53 from Havoc. So to the Finals. At the hit, The Mob went up on the tyres and Northern Spirit powered away with a wayward pass, 8.124/179.10, to win their first ever NFAA event, well done. All in all, quite a good meeting, nice to have some dry weather. Two weeks to go for our last event, the National Finals at Santa Pod, 26/27th September. The Series is very tight, pointswise, at the top and it could go either way for Dirty Harry IV and Havoc – also Freddy’s Revenge and The Mob cannot be discounted either…..all to play for.

At last, some reasonably dry weather, we only lost one session out of the planned six, to rain, for this Shakespeare County Raceway event. Most Teams had new combinations, of one sort or another, so the first slot on the Saturday was designated as a ‘test and tune’.It was good to welcome back Bennett Racing with the much changed Relentless and to Tony Betts with the eye-catching stretched Ford Model ‘B’ Venom 2, making up the field of 8 NFAA entries. On the second slot on Saturday, first up was Havoc paired against Freddy’s Revenge. After Nick Davies’ usual 500 ft burnout, Dave Grabham got the win light with a 7.194/182.33 – a new PB for the Team and well deserved after all their trials and tribulations over the years.Next up, Frank Bennett had a bye in Relentless and it was quite a handful to control the power, much pedalling needed to keep it in the lane. Unfortunately, with the totally new engine, damage was discovered, broken lifters side-lining them for the rest of the event. Then The Mob lined up against Chaos and Jim Usher posted a fine 6.921/201.68 to take the win, the best run for the Team this year, but smoke was seen at the top end. John Wright meanwhile, experienced a wheels-up launch and severe tyre shake, resulting in an early shut-off. The shakes broke the heim joints joining the clutch can to the chassis and the wheelie-bar locations on the rear axle – also giving John a severe headache to contend with.Round 3 on Sunday saw Venom 2 perform it’s final observed run, recording a 8.121/147.81, good enough to be signed off for competition.Havoc and Dirty Harry IV ran next, both laying down long smokey burnouts to heat the slicks. At the hit, Paul Wratten pipped Nick Davies, 7.567 to 7.861.For the last pairing of this session, we had Joe Bond in Nuthin’ Fancy staged against Dave Grabham in Freddy’s Revenge. The win light going to Joe, 7.302/183.43, to a centre-line clipping 7.348/197.61 from Dave, a superb side-by-side pass from the pair, that could have gone either way at the stripe. The second session on Sunday was lost to a rain shower, so all to play for on the Bank Holiday Monday for the Teams. We run a modified Cannonball or Texas Shootout. So the first session on Monday was the last chance for all to make the final 4 cars for the Finals and Semis.First up, The Mob had a bye and ran a 10.229, experiencing fuel pressure problems.Next up was Venom 2 against Chaos and the two ‘stretched’ cars in their colourful garb made an attractive picture. On the green, Tony’s reaction time put him in front of John, but by the 330’ beam, Chaos was ahead, 3.008 to 3.369 from Venom 2. Then it all went horribly wrong as Chaos drifted right, unloading a tyre, turning sharp left and spinning backwards into the Armco and overturning. John reacted quickly once he knew that it was lost, shutting off the fuel supply and tucking himself up, as by then he was just a passenger along for the ride. The car rolled and spun several times before coming to rest on it’s side at around 1000 ft out. Safety, Fire and Medics were quickly on the scene and got John out of the wreckage and into the Medical Centre, where he was pronounced to be in good shape with just a few bruises. This incident caused quite a delay for the rest of the Teams and it must have been quite nerve-racking for them, but it didn’t show when they were able to fire-up after the track was re-opened.Long smokey burnouts for the next pair, Havoc v Dirty Harry IV, Bantam against Topolino. At the hit, Havoc carried the front wheels for maybe 300’, but to no avail as the Topo edged the Bantam out 7.258 to 8.800.The last pair to the line for this session were Nuthin’ Fancy against Freddy’s Revenge. Unfortunately, Dave’s car would not retain fire, so Joe singled for the win, but not without problems, when the rear axle shattered, zinging the engine and leaving debris on the track. For the Semi’s then, Paul written soloed with a wounded Dirty Harry IV for third place.Lowest aggregate, Freddy’s Revenge was No 1 against No 2 – Havoc, for the Finals. Another Best Burnout points award for Nick Davies, then a thrilling side-by-side duel to the stripe, with Dave taking the title in a close 7.350/190.03 to a faster, but loosing 7.346/199.94 from Nick, the better reaction time from Dave carding the win.Overall, not a bad meeting, but with the exception of the sole ‘six’ from Jim Usher in The Mob, most of the cars times were considerably slower than they had run so far this year.

At last, after the ‘Snowball’ and the ‘Rain Event’, we had good weather for the ‘Sun Nationals’.With a slightly depleted field, due to a number of racers finishing off their modifications, we had warm, dry weather with an excellent track surface.Memorable aspects include; Paul Wratten in Dirty Harry IV carding all 4 runs in the ‘sixes’, with new personal bests, culminating in an impressive 6.460/208.12; Tremendous burn-outs by Nick Davies in Havoc and a PB of 6.832/200.43; Freddy’s Revenge, shoed by Dave Grabham continuing to improve with a new PB in the bigger engined Topolino – 7.421/183.56; Chaos running a new AA/FA class record of 6.195, albeit using both lanes in an interesting excursion. The Mob had a torrid time, first with fuel system glitches, then a leaking ‘O’ ring on the oil filter and finally being shut-off with a small oil leak from the front of the blower. As Ollie was heard to say – ‘All I need now is a plague of locusts’Clayton Round in Rebel ‘T’ put on his usual consistent show in the immaculate machine.Joe Bond was coming to grips with the bigger motor, with an easy first half-pass in Round 1. The subsequent attempt in the next round ended after the burn-out, with what turned out to be bent pushrods and broken lifters, sidelining Nuthin’ Fancy for the rest of the event.Arguably the most exciting match-up was in Round 3 between Dirty Harry IV and Chaos. At the hit, John Wright had a marginal advantage with a quicker reaction time, but by the 60ft timer, Paul was ahead of John 0.991 to 1.021. By the 330 ft mark, Chaos had just clawed it back with a 2.699 to Paul’s 2.730 and thereafter the nitro power kicked in after the eighth. At around the 900 ft distance a puke tank hose came loose, putting oil under one slick, causing Chaos to veer into the left lane. John did a superb rescue job to get back into the right-hand lane, at the expense of the foam blocks and reflectors, before tripping the clocks at 6.195/204.14. Luckily he was a length or two ahead of Paul who also reacted swiftly to lift off and record the win due to the Chaos infringement. The foam blocks trashed the front canards on Chaos and unfortunately some of the foam particles were ingested into Dirty Harry’s blower, causing their belt to break and damaging the valves. To the credit of Paul & Terry’s Crew, they thrashed hard to repair the damages and take their deserved place in the Finals. The other finalist was Nick Davies in Havoc, his 3 run aggregate total just pipping Rebel ‘T’ by 0.17 of a second. In the Finals, both cars had problems. Havoc with a broken blower belt after the burn-out and Dirty Harry with a remote starter engagement glitch. As neither could make their runs due to what were minor problems, in the interests of the sport, the class and the fans, it was decided to give them 15 minutes grace and re-match them for a re-run.This was adjudged to be a good decision as, after long smokey burn-outs, a thrilling side-by-side race was made. Havoc ran for at least 1000ft with the front wheels 6” off the deck, but Nick had no intention of backing off. But at the stripe it was to no avail as Paul Wratten took the win with a fine 6.460/208.12 to a gallant, but loosing, 6.927/196.17 from Nick Davies.A great meeting, plenty of action, new PB’s and plenty of fun……it doesn’t get much better than this.

After the disastrous weather at Easter for the 2008 ‘Snowball’, as it is being called, we thought that we couldn’t be that unlucky again for the Springspeed – how wrong we were……The majority of the Teams had new combinations and uprated parts fitted during the long winter break, which they had been unable to test at Easter due to the inclement weather. For the first round on Saturday morning only 7 Teams were able to make the call. The Mob discovered fuel leaks from the headers, Chaos had ignition woes(subsequently traced to a duff condenser on the mag), and new entry The Dog crew were working on the fuel distribution flow balances.First up was the beautifully engineered Havoc, first time at Shakey, versus defending champion, Clayton Round in Rebel ‘T’.Nick Davies laid down a smoky long burnout in Havoc, but broke the blower belt in the process, meaning he had to be pushed to the side of the track. Clayton, meanwhile had sportingly been holding as long as he could, but then had to go, unfortunately no time was recorded for the run.Next up was Dennis Wratten in the Dirty Harry IV Topolino against Neil Townson in the attractively engineered ’32 Ford. Dennis laid down a tremendous 1/8th mile burnout, good enough for the best burnout points award, whilst Neil was experiencing fluctuations in the oil pressure supply. At the hit, Dirty Harry stormed past the tree to record an impressive and best to date 6.776/205.70 for the win, whilst Northern spirit could only manage a 10.025/102.53.Dave Grabham’s newly engined Freddy’s Revenge had a solo when The Burning Desire of Pete Radcliffe lost drive on firing up. Dave’s Topolino ran a PB improvement to 7.427/174.43 with the Norm Wilding tune-up, to take the points.Nuthin’ Fancy was requested to perform a solo half-pass to demonstrate control of the larger, more powerful engine for Joe Bond to get to grips with. This was judged to be satisfactory for the officials and Joe was approved for future paired runs, having run an ‘easy’ 11.44.8 of the 10 teams were ready for the second call at 5.00 PM and were all about to pull down into the staging lanes when it was announced that the track was shut for the day. Apparently a demo Pro-Mod car had got out of shape on the burnout, comprehensively demolished the tree and smacked the barrier. Thankfully no-one was hurt, apart from dented pride, but it was another round lost for the NFAA, a pity because the climatic conditions were ideal.Sunday was a complete rain-out for our Class, so two further slots were lost.Monday dawned to yet more rain and drizzle, finally ceasing at around 1.00 PM and the track was dried and re-prepped by 2.30 PM, thanks to the sterling efforts of Bruno and all the track crew and marshals. We were allocated our final slot for 4.45 PM and were ready on time, but with a somewhat depleted field of 6 Teams, 1st round damages sidelining Northern Spirit, Burning Desire, Havoc and Rebel ‘T’.Opening the final session paired The Mob against Chaos, both nitro burners scheduled to run half-passes to get some feedback on the new combinations. Both cars left almost together, but Jim Usher had steering problems caused by the front wheels being somewhat skyward, instead of in contact with the track. John Wright launched hard with a 1.02 second 60 ft time and the car was planted and arrow straight, but at 200 ft, severe tyre shake caused John to lift as his vision blurred over. Back in the pits, all the plugs came out looking good and the oil was clean, so with a bit more clutch and fuel system tuning, Chaos should run the numbers.Next up was Joe Bond paired against Dennis Wratten, but the Nuthin’ Fancy car locked–up solid prior to the burn-out, subsequently traced to a dropped valve, mashed piston and spun mains. So the Dirty Harry IV Topolino had a solo, but Dennis wasn’t about to take it easy, recording a 6.700/203.03 pass for an elapsed time PB – more points to add to the best burnout points, for the second time in a row. The ‘Essex Boys’ are going to be tough competitors to get around in 2008.Freddy’s Revenge, shoed by Dave Grabham, had a bye run, but couldn’t improve on his first run, carding an off the pace 8.906/125.15.Finally, Bjorn Martelsson got his chance in The Dog (so named ‘cos it bites), to begin his licensing runs with a burnout, launch and 60 ft observed run. The car sounded very strong on an 80% nitro mix, but broke the reverser after the burnout and had to be pushed back so it could stage. On the green the car left straight and true, with all candles lit and ran to over 100 ft before Bjorn lifted.Apart from the non-permitted push back, the Officials seemed satisfied with the first licensing run.Bjorn and all his Crew were relieved it was all over, were very enthusiastic and appreciative of the support from all the NFAA Teams and promised to return soon to continue the process. So the Event Winner, based on lowest ET’s, as the scheduled format was curtailed by the weather, was Dennis Wratten, Runner-Up was Dave Grabham, with John Wright and Neil Townson filling 3rd and 4th spots respectively. All in all, a disappointing start to the 2008 Season, caused by the weather, about which we can do nothing, but looking forward to our next event, the Summer Nationals at Santa Pod on the 14 & 15th June, when we all aim to do better.

The weather for the first meeting of 2008 was dreadful, perhaps we should re-name it as The Easter Snowball.

Driving cross-winds, bitter cold, rain, sleet and snow characterised the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.A warm welcome was extended to Bjorn Martensson and ‘The Dog’ Team from Sweden. They only received the car from the USA, two weeks before the event and had changes to make, such as a new roll-cage, before they arrived at Santa Pod. Bjorn’s objective was to commence his observed licensing runs, but due to the weather and other technical difficulties, that was not possible. We hope to see this AA/FA again, for further meetings this year.

For all the other teams it was a time to catch up after the Winter break, bench race and keep warm.

It was nice to see the Bennett family on Saturday and all good wishes go to Luke who is enduring a course of chemo.

The final day, Monday, was marginally better, but with little heat in the track. The Wratten Brothers in their BB/FA were the only ones to put in a pass, a 7.119/187.97, which was excellent, given the conditions.

For the rest of us, it’s a case of getting even better prepared for the SpringSpeed meeting, May 3rd-5th at Shakespeare County.

Well, our 2007 season is now over and it’s time for a look back at what we have achieved in only our 3rd year.Overall, a pretty impressive year, almost all Teams ran PB’s….and not by a few hundredth’s, there were many significant reductions in ET’s and gains in Terminal Speeds.Almost all cars are now in the 6 second zone, subject to weather and track conditions and these figures are long way from those recorded in our first season. It’s all down to track time and regular competition in getting the combinations somewhere about right.Older cars have resurfaced and been uprated and some new ones should appear in 2008, swelling the numbers. We have had a safe year, no explosions, no fires and no wall/Armco contacts. Most Teams have had some damages, probably inevitable given the uprated performances, but they have been overcome such that we were able to field more cars at most events.Co-ordination, appearance and engineering standards have all improved by a country quarter mile.Congratulations, again, to Clayton Round and his Team (Mr. Consistency), on defending his championship and winning the title 3 years in a row.The Points Structure that was established to create a level playing field, seems to have largely been successful in achieving closely matched side-by-side racing. The competition for second place between Joe Bond and Frank Bennett went down to the wire – only 10 points in it after the final runs. The race for fourth to sixth places was equally tight, with a difference of only 40 points covering this span.Everyone remains enthusiastic about the Series and we have all had fun.We think that we have put on a good show for the Spectators, Sponsors, Tracks, Clubs and the Media. We thank, without reservation, the hard work by so many officials, track crews and organisers, that has enabled us to indulge our passion. Now it is time to regroup, uprate, spend our pennies(including those we haven’t got yet), and appear bigger, bolder and louder for the 2008 Season. This is what we do……. we race Fuel Altereds….. anything else is just a means of doing it……..Thanks again, we have had a ball.

For the SCR Springspeed event, the NFAA unfortunately had a reduced field as Frank Bennett was temporarily ill, Dave Grabham was still searching for parts after the damages at the Thunderball and the Wratten Brothers had head sealing problems.Xtreme, ably piloted by ‘Sideways’ Bob Glassup, put on a spectacular display on his first pass. The immaculate Topolino, winner of the best appearing car points, pulled a giant wheelie as it launched, bounced down and lifted the rear slicks 2ft off the track. At one time all 4 wheels had considerable daylight showing under them – perhaps he should be known as ‘Airborne’ Bob Glassup…In the other lane, Rebel ‘T’ got tyre shake and veered close to the guardrails, so neither car ran to their usual numbers. For the second slot, The Mob was paired against Joe Bond in Nuthin’ Fancy. At the hit, Joe shot out of the hole, hooked left, crossed the centre-line and got very close to Jim, causing both to back off.Xtreme ran a half pass to check out the extra ballast at the front end and the revised wheelie-bar setting, to see if this had cured the previous skywards tendency. Clayton had a bye in Rebel ‘T’ and ran a storming 7.06/193.47.Round 3 saw the return of Tony Betts in a strong sounding Venom and proceeded to set a new PB and lowest NFAA time of 6.68, clicking off at 1000ft when the engine nosed over.Next up was Rebel ‘T’ against Xtreme and on the green, both launched well, but Clayton lost fire just past the tree, when an HT lead shook loose – leaving Bob to win with a 7.58/182.85.Joe Bond had a bye and ran a new PB of 7.37/181.55, surely it will not be long before he cards his first ‘six’.Chaos made a welcome reappearance for a scheduled half-pass, to check out the new combination and to get some base-line data to work from. John Wright shoed the car to a 60ft time of 1.04, 2.77/164.5 at 330ft and 4.16 at 660ft. The incrementals were encouraging and a full pass next time out was scheduled.Round 4 saw Clayton Round record his first ‘six’ at Shakespeare – a 6.98/192.05 against Xtreme, which had to shut off after the burnout with a broken flex-plate.The other cars were ready to run, but the curfew put paid to any passes, so we all looked forward to another run and the Finals on the Bank Holiday Monday. We awoke to rain and despite the heroic efforts of the Track Crew to dry the strip, showers intervened and the meeting had to be called, to the disappointment of all.The track preparation was excellent, thanks Bruno, as evidenced by the PB’s and improved times.High hopes morphed into a damp squib, but Mother Nature is a factor none of us can control – we will be back soon.

Improvements for the NFAAAfter the long Winter break, the SPR Thunderball turned out to be the best event ever for the NFAA.All Teams had new combinations and parts and no-one was totally certain if the investment in time and money would yield results in the season’s first meeting. The reality was better than we dreamed for, virtually all the teams recorded PB’s, many lowering their ET’s two or three times. We had the benefit and expertise of ace-tuner and AA/FA racer, Dave Benjamin over from Seattle, who oversaw the fuel system revisions to Chaos and The Mob to great effect. The Mob ran back-to back passes of 6.81/209 and 6.78/206 respectively. On their final qualifier they were expecting a 6.60, but had to shut-off prior to staging when Ian Marshall noticed a nozzle leak – good call Ian.Chaos was struggling, due to a hurried build, having had to ship in an ex-Jim Murphy block when the two new Rodeck billets did not arrive. John Wright launched hard and recorded a 1.07s 60ft time, prior to the blower belt breaking – showing the potential that has yet to be unleashed.Venom, shoed by Tony Betts, had a torrid time. The late arrival of pre-ordered parts needed modifications to fit and, coupled with magneto problems, meant that he could not perform to his usual standard.Clayton, Frank, Bob, Dave and Joe all put on an impressive show with close racing and improved PB’s. Rebel ‘T’ (Clayton) and Relentless (Frank) both recorded their first ‘sixes’. Bob Glassup, with the superb new paint scheme on Xtreme, ran a best of 7.04, surely a six second runner in the near future.Dave Grabham improved his time to a 8.30 with the ‘mouse’ motor, before succumbing to crank woes. Joe Bond improved to a 7.49 on only his 21st run in the car- much more to come as the season progresses. The quickest four qualifiers were thus set for the run-offs. Frank and Joe squared up for the 3rd and 4th positions, Frank taking the win light with a stout (and first) 6.90/195.67 to Joe’s 7.8/168.4.For the trophies, the dual was between Clayton and Bob. After long smokey burn-outs, it was Clayton first to the stripe with a fine 6.95/190.48 to Bob’s 7.35/188.10.Overall, a great meeting, blessed by ideal weather, the elation far outweighing any disappointments. Many thanks to Santa Pod, SPRC, the track crews, announcers and media for a memorable Easter weekend – stay tuned, we will be back.
